Where To Find Treatment
“You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to solve the problem.”
When looking for treatment for a substance abuse problem, it is generally advisable to hire an individual, group or clinic that is licensed by a state licensing board or national certification group. Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors and addictions counselors are licensed or certified by their respective states. Many large clinics, rehabilitation hospitals and psychiatric facilities are also licensed. Ask about licensure or certification.
There are a number of “treatment locator” services available online. Click on a link, enter a zip code and see what is available
- Psychology Today’s Find a Therapist locator.
- The American Psychological Association Find a Psychologist locator.
- The National Association of Social Workers Help Starts Here locator.
- There is also a US government treatment locator website run by the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration — aka SAMHSA. While easy to use, please note this directory does not allow mental health professionals in private practice (such as myself) or in a small group practice not licensed or certified specifically as a mental health clinic or (community) mental health center to list themselves.
tl;dr: Help is out there. And it is easy to find.
